A distinguished diplomat and highly respected architect of U.S.-China policy, Jeffrey A. Bader was a steadfast friend of the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy’s 21st Century China Center.
He delivered the inaugural Robert F. Ellsworth Memorial Lecture in 2013 and was recognized by the UC San Diego China Forum for his lifetime achievement for contributions to U.S.-China relations in 2019.
Jeff championed a policy ethos that was both principled and pragmatic, strategically driven and centered on American interests. He had a towering presence in the field of China policy. Throughout his four decades of public service, he provided counsel to presidents and mentored a new generation of China-focused experts in the U.S.
To perpetuate Jeff’s legacy and nurture future generations of China experts, the 21st Century China Center is establishing a fellowship in his honor. The Jeffrey A. Bader Fellowship will support students at the school who have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career devoted to contributing to U.S. policy toward China.
We invite friends, colleagues and admirers of Jeff’s to make a personal donation to the fellowship fund. Our goal is to raise $125,000, and thanks to a special challenge, this $125,000 will be matched on a 1:1 basis, providing $250,000 in total to fund the award.
