James Brown is a senior career diplomat with extensive experience advancing the United States' interests in China and East Asia. From 2005-2014 he served as the Ambassador’s principal advisor on language, cultural and protocol matters at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Earlier postings include Deputy Spokesperson in Seoul, Senior Diplomatic Interpreter in Washington, and multiple assignments to the Political, Economic and Science & Technology sections at the U.S. Embassy, Beijing.

A leading expert on Chinese affairs, Mr. Brown has played a pivotal role in virtually every aspect of U.S. -China relations for 40 years. He has extensive experience in Northeast Asian affairs, having participated in key interactions including each round of the Six-Party Talks aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue. Mr. Brown has been called on to serve as interpreter and advisor for senior officials, including seven American presidents, at key diplomatic interactions around the world. His languages include Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean and French and his contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Department of State Linguist of the Year and Superior Honor Awards.
