Sheena Chestnut Greitens

Sheena Chestnut Greitens is associate professor and director of the Asia Policy Program at the University of Texas, Austin, as well as a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. For 2023-25, she is on leave from the University of Texas to serve as visiting professor of Indo-Pacific security at the U.S. Army War College. Chestnut Greitens focuses her research, writing, and policy-advising on the topics of national security; authoritarian politics and foreign policy; and East Asia, especially China and Korea. She has published widely in academic and public-facing outlets and is the author of two books: “Dictators and Their Secret Police” (2016) and “Politics of the North Korean Diaspora” (2023). Her third book, in progress, focuses on how China’s preoccupation with regime security shapes its grand strategy.
