David Shambaugh

David Shambaugh

David Shambaugh is the Gaston Sigur Professor of Asian Studies, Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University and the founding director of the university’s China Policy Program. He is also a distinguished visiting fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. He has served on the board of directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the advisory board of the National Bureau of Asian Research and the East-West Center fellowship board. In addition, he is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of its board of studies and a participant in other public policy and scholarly organizations. As an author, Shambaugh has published numerous books, including “China’s Leaders: From Mao to Now” (2022), “Where Great Powers Meet: America & China in Southeast Asia” (2021) and “China and the World” (2020). His new book, “Breaking the Engagement: How China Won and Lost America,” will be published in May 2025 by Oxford University Press.
