Profile
Daniel Kurtz-Phelan is editor of Foreign Affairs, a position he has held since January 2021. He previously spent three years as executive editor of the magazine and served in the U.S. State Department, including as a member of the secretary of state’s Policy Planning Staff. His narrative history of George Marshall’s post-World War II mission to China, “The China Mission,” was published by W.W. Norton in 2018 and was named a best book of the year by The Economist and an editors’ pick by The New York Times Book Review. He has been a fellow at New America, the Wilson Center and the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, and he has taught at New York and Yale universities. His writing has also appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic.
