Andy Rothman

Andy Rothman provides advice to corporate directors and institutional investors on the opportunities and risks presented by China. He is also the Senior China Fellow of the Asia Society of Northern California and a member of the board of directors of the Coral Tree Education Foundation. He began his financial sector career in 2000 as the Shanghai-based China macro strategist for CLSA, an institutional brokerage and investment group. After living in China for more than 20 years, in 2014 Rothman moved to California to become the China strategist for Matthews Asia. He established Sinology LLC in 2025. Previously, he had a 17-year, China-focused career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, including as head of the macroeconomics office at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. He first went to China as a student in 1980 and began his diplomatic career in Guangzhou in 1984. He also attended China’s first rock concert, featuring Wham!
